What is the difference between drilling and boring?

Drilling is a cutting process that involves the use of a drill bit to cut a circular-shape hole in a workpiece. The drill bit used in drilling is a type of rotary cutting tool that, like other rotary cutting tools, rotates while subsequently scraping material out of the workpiece. On the other hand, boring is a cutting process that involves the use of a single-point cutting tool or boring head to enlarge an existing hole in a workpiece. This is in stark contrast to drilling, which is performed to create an initial hole in a workpiece. Boring processes are typically performed using a lathe, milling machine or a horizontal boring mill. Each machine uses a different mechanism, but they are all designed to enlarge an existing hole in a workpiece — and that’s the defining characteristic of boring. While drilling is performed to create an initial hole in a workpiece, boring is performed to enlarge an existing hole in a workpiece. Essentially, you can’t begin boring until you have already drilled. If you are unsure if you need boring or drilling services, contact us at (734) 455-5333 and we can help you determine what kind of project you have and what services you may need.

Can materials other than wood be drilled?

It’s a common assumption that drilling can only be performed on soft materials like wood. Many drilling processes do, in fact, involve wooden workpieces, but others involve workpieces made of harder materials, including metal. As long as the drill bit is harder than the workpiece, it will scrape out material to create a circular-shaped hole.

Are boring machines and tunnel boring machines the same thing?

No. Tunnel boring machines are massive versions of the kinds of boring machines we use. Tunnel boring machines are used, as their name suggests, to bore tunnels into natural surfaces like mountain faces. The kind of boring machines we utilize are for expanding smaller holes. Our boring machines are table-mounted and bore vertically rather than horizontally.

How experienced are you?

Miller Machine Inc. has been serving the country since 1988, so with over 30 years of experience, you can feel confident that you will get only the best results and best treatment by us. We have constantly been at the forefront of the drilling and boring industry, which is why we have been around for so long. We also have a very wide service area, as we work in the midwest and the southern United States, so we have not only plenty of happy former customers but plenty of work to show you from the past 32 years.

How long will the project take?

This very much depends on a variety of factors, such as what service you require, your location, the scale of your project, and what your deadline is. The vague answer is that we will always get the job finished on time and at a reasonable price. If you would like a more specific cost estimate and time estimate on your project, call or email us and we will respond as quickly as we can. There is also a contact form on this website that you can fill out instead, if you would like.

Will you get the project done safely?

When it comes to drilling and boring, there are a number of safety factors that we pay attention to in order to prevent any injury. Protective equipment such as gloves, eye wear, and ear plugs are always required of our technicians and anyone in the vicinity of the drilling/boring. We guarantee safety on top of precision.
